This city goes by fast, you know?

I can't blame them I guess.

I just try not to let life pass me by.

I grew up in the city. Or rather, under it. I ran away from my father's house when I was eight years old and generally I try not to think about it. I'd run away a dozen times before, but this time he didn't come looking for me. So I didn't go looking for him either. After that I belonged to the underside of Midnight City.

It wasn't so bad living in the tunnels. There were a lot of other kids down there and we took care of eachother as best as we could. Most of the adults that lived down there knew better than to try and mess with anyone who was a part of the gang. That didn't keep us from getting to danger from time to time, whether it was the kind we found or the type we made. There was community and beloning as much as there was ... everything else. It's a fast life in those tunnels, and it takes a lot of trying to hold onto your spark. I was lucky that I had someone helping me.

To this day when I'm walking home at night I feel safer under the street than above it. I guess that's why I drive now.

It wasn't long after wandering into the subway that I found a kid that liked to pick a lot of fights. When he fought for something he was going to put everything he had into it, he didn't leave anything behind. That's why I was so drawn to him at the beginning, because we were the same. We were going to survive no matter what. I've watched that spark slowly fade in him over the years. I do what I can to keep it alive for him too, and I hope that he's just tucked it away for safekeeping. I know it's still in him somewhere.

It took five years for the vampire to find us. There had been stories about the bloodsucking creature that stole kids that wandered too far into the dark on their own, but it wasn't hard to attribute that to the regular dangers our kind of kids encounter. But then he came for us. For Aelix. And he promised us food, and safety, and protection. In exchange we just had to become his servants, his hands. It became our job to execute his orders to the letter.

I'm not proud of the things I've done. I was a kid, and I did what I needed to get to the end of the day. I was lucky. I was never of any real interest to monster that put a roof over my head, so when I asked to leave he didn't even say goodbye. I just paid by debt and never looked back.

That's the only way I've be able to make it in this city. I put one food infront of the other and turn my face towards the sun.

i'll see you around...
